Reference Manager
and PubMed

Reference Manager has an internet search option which provides access to the PubMed database. This provides a simple way to do basic seaches within the program. However, there may be times when using the PubMed search interface would be preferred eg: for advanced search options. To find out how to import files saved from PubMed click here.

Thomson Reuters, the developers of Reference Manager software, have made the following statements with regards to connectivity between Reference Manager and PubMed.

August 2007

Users typically save their PubMed records from the PubMed website by either choosing "File, Save As" from the browser window or by right-clicking on the browser window and selecting "Save As". Due to changes PubMed have made to their website, this method will no longer work properly. Instead, use the "Send To" pulldown menu provided with the PubMed navigation bar.

21 April, 2004

Reference Manager version 11 was released on 17 March 2004. Since version 11 was designed to work with the new PubMed infrastructure implemented last year, you can use version 11 to connect to and search PubMed.

12 August, 2003

The National Library of Medicine has implemented system infrastructure enhancements that have affected the PubMed Internet Search feature in Reference Manager versions 9.0, 9.5 and 10.0.

Version 10.0 Single User Version:
An update patch is available at no charge from our website to all registered Reference Manager v10.0 users.  This update restores the PubMed Internet Search feature in Reference Manager 10.  Download the
Reference Manager v10.0.1 Update.

Version 10.0 Network Edition, Volume Licence and Multi-copy Customers:
If you have a volume licence, multi-copy licence or network edition of Reference Manager v10.0, we can send you a version 10.0.1 CD at no charge.  Please send us your program details (ie, serial number and registration details) and mailing address to receive a copy of the update.
Click here to send us an email.

Version 9.0 and 9.5 Users:
The PubMed Internet Search feature in versions 9.0 and 9.5 no longer works.  Due to the magnitude of the engineering modifications necessary, we will not be able to update version 9.0 or 9.5 to restore PubMed connectivity.  If this feature is important to you, we recommend that you upgrade to version 11.

Options for Version 9.0 and 9.5 users:

A) Upgrade to version 12 to continue to use the PubMed Internet Search feature. For upgrade pricing/ordering, please click here.

B) If you do not wish to upgrade, you can still execute your search on the PubMed website and save your references into a text file that can be imported into Reference Manager. To do this:

1. Browse to the PubMed website through your web browser (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez).
2. Enter your searches in the website (Select "Clipboard" from the "Send to" drop down menu to save records from multiple searches as you work).
3. On the search results page, select "MEDLINE" in the dropdown menu next to the "Display" button.
4. Choose "File" from the "Send to" drop down menu, and then click "Send to".
5. Click on the "Save" button and save the file somewhere easily accessible such as your desktop (we recommend saving with the file extension *.txt).
6. In Reference Manager, open the database where you would like these references saved.
7. Under the References Menu, select Import Text File.
8. In the Filters field, select the Browse button [...], select PubMed.cap
9. In the Text File field, select the Browse button [...], and then select your downloaded *.txt file.
10. Click the Import button and your references will be imported.
